Tinnitus & sound sensitivity assessment and treatment. Evidence-based care
Every new patient begins with an initial tinnitus assessment
After the assessment, if you’d like to begin treatment this is matched to how tinnitus is affecting you and the plan is based on your tinnitus goals.
Not everyone needs a full treatment plan. For some patients, the assessment settles things considerably. For others, a structured treatment plan is helpful and recommended. Your clinician talks you through what’s recommended at your follow-up call.
Below is a summary of treatment plans, for information. There is nothing to choose now, as a recommendation is made at your assessment.
Assessment fee: $400 ($350 for pension holders, seniors card holders, and students)
Tinnitus treatment: a stepped care approach
Not every patient needs the same level of support. Each treatment plan at the Blue Mountains Tinnitus Clinic is matched to the level of impact tinnitus is having on your life, and your goals. This is identified at your initial Tinnitus Assessment.
Tinnitus foundations
For adults who want to understand their tinnitus and start building a calmer relationship with it. Over five weeks, you’ll undertake treatment in the areas tinnitus affects most: sound, sleep, concentration, and emotional wellbeing. For people with milder tinnitus impacts.
Habituation plan
For adults with moderate tinnitus impacts who are ready for structured treatment to help settle tinnitus into the background of your life.
This treatment plan builds practical coping skills for the areas tinnitus impacts most, then adds early cognitive skills to start working with the thoughts and beliefs that keep tinnitus at the centre of your attention.
CBT for tinnitus
For adults whose tinnitus is having a significant impact day to day.
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for tinnitus is recommended as a first-line therapeutic treatment for tinnitus distress in the European tinnitus guideline (Cima et al., 2019).
Over ten weeks, we work with the thoughts, beliefs, and nervous system responses that keep tinnitus at the centre of your life, so it can settle into the background.
CBT for tinnitus plus +
For adults with complex tinnitus presentations who want continued clinical and counselling support after completing the CBT for tinnitus core program. Three additional sessions allow us to support you in maintaining gains made and planning for any setbacks.
Neuromonics sound therapy treatment
Two intakes per year: Next intake February 2027. begin with your tinnitus assessment to determine if this program suits you.
Neuromonics is a personalised sound therapy treatment protocol for tinnitus. It uses a spectrally modified acoustic stimulus, adjusted to your own hearing profile, delivered through an app and combined with structured clinical guidance. Neuromonics has been used in tinnitus clinics for over twenty years, and clinical trials report reduced tinnitus distress for people with suitable hearing profiles (Davis et al., 2007).
HOW IT WORKS
Sound therapy gives your brain a gentle, enriched acoustic signal to work with, which supports the natural process of habituation, where the brain gradually stops treating tinnitus as something to attend to. Neuromonics pairs this with elements of cognitive behavioural therapy and regular reviews, so the sound work sits inside a broader plan rather than standing alone.
WHAT’S INVOLVED
The program runs over 6 months, using the device daily at home. You'll have scheduled reviews with your clinician to track progress, adjust the plan, and work through the cognitive and lifestyle side of managing tinnitus. It's a structured commitment rather than a quick fix, and it works best when followed consistently with guided support.
WHO IT SUITS
Neuromonics is designed for particular hearing and tinnitus presentations, so it isn't the right fit for everyone. This is why every patient begins with an Initial Tinnitus & Lifestyle Assessment. The assessment tells us whether Neuromonics suits your hearing profile and your goals, or whether another pathway would serve you better.
THE EVIDENCE
Sound therapy is one of several approaches recommended in international tinnitus guidelines (Cima et al., 2019; Tunkel et al., 2014), used as part of your wider management plan for tinnitus .
Hyperacusis support: assessment & treatment for sound sensitivities
If you live with hyperacusis, everyday sounds can feel too loud or hard to tolerate. They may even seem painful. Like tinnitus, this is a change in how the brain responds to sound. Your treatment helps you understand what’s happening and build your tolerance slowly. All patients begin with an initial hyperacusis assessment. In person or via tele-health.
Tinnitus follow-up support sessions
Follow up and progress sessions are available for existing Blue Mountains Tinnitus Clinic patients who have completed a program and want a check in at a later date or post-program support.
If you are new to the clinic, please book an initial Tinnitus & Lifestyle Assessment as your first step. This is an essential first step for all new clients.
Follow-up session fee: $250 | 50 minutes
